Pinkest Witch Cup Cakes interview

Today’s supplier interview is with the lovely Klare Bailey of Pinkest Witch Cup Cakes.

Company Name
Pinkest Witch Cup Cakes ( of Pinkest Witch Ltd)

When did you launch your business?

2010 is when we became official, happily due to demand.

What inspired you to start your business?

A love of cake, good cake that pleased the eye and the palette!

After being caught up with the cupcake boom that started to sweep the UK a number of years ago, I got so fed up of being utterly disappointed with cupcakes that looked so incredibly inviting but then on first bite, were either dry, heavy, didn’t truly deliver the flavour it had promised and generally, to top it off, had a frosting that was so sweet and dense that could almost feel your gums curling back and your fillings dropping out.

I set out on a mission to come up with a cake that was incredibly light, moist, a delectable topping that added another layer and dimension to the palette, flavour’s that left you under no doubt as to what they were and of course, the cakes had to be pretty.

Also, as a female of the modern world, as with many of us very busy ladies we are trying to juggle jobs, look after our children, take care of the home, walk the dog, nurture our relationships , keep fit and try and look good 24/7, I wanted to come up with a product that not only would tempt ladies, but that ladies would feel was worth giving into that temptation so when they finally got 5 minutes of ‘me time’, they could sink into one of our cakes, the clock would stop, the merry go round would slow down and they would get a little taste of heaven… as we say ‘If you are going to fall off the dieting wagon, Pinkest Witch Cup Cakes are worth the bump!’

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Oh gosh – where do I start?! Obviously the ‘quality control’ is high up on the list! It’s a tough job coming up with new flavours, creating them and then tasting them but someone has to do it. We also ensure that every batch is checked before it leaves the business and is handed over to its new home. I also love going out with new flavours and seeing the responses from clients of course, however the ultimate favourite is the weddings. Seeing all the planning coming together, after months of meetings and tasting with brides and finally having that huge stand of cupcakes… it’s a wonderful sight and then to hear from the brides and their guests and STILL have people talking about the cakes weeks after the wedding, it fills me with pride that the bride and groom have chosen to let me be part of such a special moment in their lives.

What has been the best moment of your business?

There have been a lot! From a ‘scary moment’ point of view, the bride who sent me an email that contained her payment, a colour swatch, a brief over view of what she wanted and the time and date of her wedding and a bottom note saying, ‘thanks, see you there!’ was incredibly nerve wracking but never one to step away from a challenge, I agreed to do it! The cakes looked fabulous, the colour matched up perfectly with the rest of the wedding, the bride and groom loved it and the guests are still coming to me for more cakes for gifts etc

Having the results back from the laboratories that tested my Gluten Free version of the cupcakes, and having them officially declared Gluten Free was a pretty special moment too as it meant we could now offer exactly the same service to individuals with Coeliac Disease or Gluten Intolerance.

Having said all of that, I get a big buzz of pride for EVERY wedding I do. You get to know your brides, grooms and often bridesmaids & family too on the run up to a wedding and it always feels like a ‘best moment’, no matter how many weddings we get under our belts.

What are your plans for the future?

Lots of plans! – As a fairly young company, we want to build on our wedding business and bring affordable cupcake weddings to as many people as we can. Although based in Lincolnshire, we travel miles with the cakes and think nothing of getting up at silly o’clock to get the cakes to a wedding that is 3 or 4 hours drive away.

We also attend a lot of events such as Pamper Nights, Craft Events and Food Fayres and intend on doing lots of these too. It’s a great way to meet lots of people, market the company, give people chance to try new flavours created specifically for those events (we recently created a cupcake based on that traditional Scottish Desert, Cranachan – honey, raspberry, oats and a hint of whisky – and boy did that go down a storm!) and as an added bonus, and, in the name of market research, we get to try food from other exhibitors!

We’ve recently launched our ‘Captured Cup Cake (TM)‘ which is a cupcake in a jar! Double the amount of cupcake, double the amount of frosting, totally postable, lasts for up to 10 days in the fridge and when you are ready for a cupcake moment you simply bring it out, let it come up to room temperature ( probably the longest wait you will ever have in your life but worth the patience) and then tuck in with a spoon. Heaven! Lots of clients are buying them for themselves but they make a fabulous gift to send to someone you love too.

Finally, we have begun to stock our produce in a number of outlets and are in talks with a few more. Our aim is to increase the number of retailers who carry our cupcakes so that people don’t have to wait until an event to get one of our cupcakes.

Can you give us a ‘Typical day in the life of….’?

A typical cupcaking day is very much like anyone having a baking day, but on a much bigger scale. Lots of planning has gone into it before hand, to make ensure we have all the correct ingredients, have the desired boxes, that the butterflies have been made ready to sit on the cupcakes etc and then we crack on with the creating. By sticking to a routine we can produce the numbers we need even for a really big event and our cakes are always made in the 24 hour window before the event so they are beautifully fresh, and should clients wish to or need to, the cakes can be frozen in their prime and defrosted in the same state when required.
