Friday Fun, Facts & Tips

Well Friday is here again, where did the week go? Today I thought I would bring you some wedding traditions and the meaning behind them!

  • The word "Wedding" come from the Anglo-Saxon word "wedd" this meant a man would marry a woman and pay her Father
  • Bouquet's were originally made from strong herbs such as thyme and garlic, these were to scare away evil spirits and also to cover the smell of guests who had not bathed recently - Nice!!!
  • Brides were thought to be very lucky on their wedding day, so for good luck guests would often tear a piece of the wedding dress off to keep for good luck! The bouquet tossing came from the bride wanting to share her good luck and so she could keep her dress in one piece - I bet brides are glad the dress tearing ended I don't think tearing your Vera Wang would go down well!
  • Bridesmaids would wear a dress similar to the brides to confuse evil spirits
  • Veils were used to hide the brides face in case the groom did not like her appearance, weddings were often arranged by families, money and land was often exchanged by family members. So to make sure the wedding went ahead the groom would not see the bride until just before the ceremony
  • the wedding finger did used to be the index finger before the 5th century, but the third finger (which is used now) is believed to be contain the "Vein of love" leading to the heart.
They are many more traditions that we use today that were started hundreds of years ago for very different reasons to what we use them for today!!

I am off to look up some more traditions for you, have a great weekend and don't forget to check out our savings post tomorrow.

Have a great weekend
